How does it all work?
This package was created primarily to replace existing tape-based backup systems. This hard disk-based solution eliminates the complexity and hassle always associated with using tape as the backup medium.
This hard disk-based backup system is better than a conventional tape backup system because...
- you'll never need to swap tapes.
- you'll never face the litany of error messages that tape technology invariably presents.
- you’ll never need to wait for a tape to spool to a particular location to retrieve
one file.
- you don't need to worry about cleaning the tape drive record/play heads.
- you don't need to buy replacement tapes because hard drives will last for years.
- it allows for built-in data redundancy, making the whole system more reliable.
The Connection
Historically, backup solutions resided in or near the file server or desktop computer, but this is no longer necessary. The NAS box is actually a little computer that can be plugged into any available Local Area Network (LAN) port in your office. And, backup jobs can be sent to the NAS box from any computer connected to the LAN.
We include a small multi-port high-speed LAN switch and patch cables in this package so you can connect multiple devices (the NAS box, administrator's computer, etc.) to the network. See the sample network wiring diagram that appears on the Overview tab.
The Backup Process
Your existing software will backup your data to the NAS box over the LAN.
The two hard drives in the NAS box are configured to automatically mirror each other, meaning that the second drive contains an exact duplicate of the first drive. This ensures that in the event of a single drive failure, your backups remain intact. With this redundancy there is a total of 1.5TB of hard drive space available to you for backing up your critical business data and the contents of the desktop and laptop computers in your office.
Off-site Backup to the included Portable USB Hard Drive
To ensure that your data is always secure, we recommend that you keep an off-site copy of your backups on the portable hard drive included in this package. Doing this ensures that, in the event of fire or flood at your office or if the NAS box is stolen, you'll always have a duplicate of your backups safely off-site.
We recommend that your designated System Administrator perform a backup to the USB hard drive at least once a week, after which the drive should be taken immediately off-site or placed in a fire-proof safe on the premises. We also recommend that each individual backup that's placed on the off-site USB drive be password-protected, or further encrypted, so that your data remains secure if the drive is lost or stolen.
If you are not already backing up your file server and/or your LAN computers, click here to see our other Backup Packages, which include software bundles.
The Power Protection
We've included a business-grade American Power Conversion (APC) uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in this solution to protect the components from such maladies as dirty AC from the wall, power surges, brownouts, and complete blackouts. The NAS box and the UPS are connected by a USB cable and continuously communicate with each other; so, if necessary, the NAS box will gracefully shut down until the power event is resolved. This APC UPS is capable of protecting both the Backup Package and an additional computer system—perfect for if you plan to place the NAS box at your System Administrator’s desk, which is often the case.
What we will do
-
We will configure the NAS backup drives for mirroring.
-
We will configure the LAN settings (IP address, hostname, etc.) that will allow you to connect the NAS box to your LAN.
-
We will configure the NAS user accounts.
-
We will configure the NAS shared folders and set up the security rights for each.
-
We will optimize the NAS system performance, power, alert settings, etc.
-
We will provide you with complete, comprehensive instructions regarding how to connect each element of the package.
What you will need to do
-
You will need to answer and send back a questionnaire that we will e-mail to you following your purchase. It will ask for, among other things, administrator e-mail addresses and some specific information about your network. Note that we will not ask for any passwords, and we will keep all information that you provide to us confidential.
-
When you receive your package, you'll need to connect everything to your network and verify connectivity.
-
You can, optionally, replace the passwords that we employed to configure the NAS box with your own unique passwords.
-
You will need to redirect your existing backup software to send backups from your file server and/or your LAN computers to the NAS box.
-
You will need to contact us if you run into any problem during the installation ― we're here to help!
That's it! Remember, we will provide you with complete instructions to accomplish
your tasks.
