- Details
How does it all work?
This package was created primarily for those who have no facility for backing up their Microsoft Windows Server and the Windows computers that are connected to their LAN. This is an ideal complement to a brand-new file server, it's a modern replacement for traditional tape-based backup system, and the Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 software makes backing up and recovering entire systems, as well as individual files, a breeze.
The Software: Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 (BESR)
For this package we specify two pieces of software ― Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Server Edition and their Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Desktop Edition software. Backup Exec System Recovery is our favorite backup software because it is the easiest to use, is the most versatile, and is the most reliable that we've ever encountered. So now we use this exact backup system in our office!
Why Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery?
-
Unlike slow, traditional file-by-file backup software, BESR records a snapshot, or an image, of your hard drive's contents and stores the image to a selected location while you continue to work ― without interruption and at anytime. No user or station needs to be logged off during the process.
-
Because BESR records a image of your system state at a precise moment, if you have to restore from a backup, your system starts in the exact state it was in when the backup image was recorded. This means that all of your operating system files and settings, all of your software installs, and all of your vital company data are restored together at once!
-
The stored image can be used for complete hard drive restorations or to restore just one individual file quickly and easily.
-
BESR is "set it and forget it" technology. After the initial setup, the software will backup your computer hard drives at set intervals, date and time stamp each backup, and delete old backups to manage disk space - all automatically!
-
This software allows an administrator to remotely manage the backup jobs and schedules on all the computers in an office right from his or her own workstation — a huge time-saver!
BTW, if you don't need server backup software, click here to see our other Backup Packages.
The Connection
Historically, a backup solution resided in or near the source desktop computer or was mounted in a file server, but this is no longer necessary. The network-attached-storage (NAS) box is actually a little computer that can be plugged into any available Local Area Network (LAN) port in your office. Therefore, backup jobs can be sent to the NAS box from any computer connected to the LAN.
The included high-speed LAN switch and patch cables allow you to connect multiple devices (the NAS box, administrator's computer, etc. - see diagram) to the LAN.
The Network-Attached Storage (NAS) Box
Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery will backup your Windows Server, as well as any desktop and laptop computers, to the NETGEAR NAS box over the LAN.
The two hard drives in the NAS box are configured to automatically mirror each other, meaning that the second drive contains an exact duplicate of the first drive. This ensures that in the event of a single drive failure, your backups will remain intact. With this redundancy there is a total of 1.5TB of hard drive space available to you for backing up your critical business data and the contents of the desktop and laptop computers in your office.
Disk-based backup is superior to conventional tape backup because...
- you'll never need to swap tapes.
- you'll never face the litany of error messages that tape technology invariably presents.
- you’ll never need to wait for a tape to spool to a particular location to retrieve one file.
- you don't need to worry about cleaning the tape drive record/play heads.
- you don't need to buy replacement tapes because hard drives will last for years.
- it allows for built-in redundancy, making the whole system more reliable.
Offsite Backup
To ensure that your data is always secure, we recommend that you keep an offsite copy of your backups on the portable hard drive included in this package. Doing this ensures that, in the event of fire or flood at your office or if the NAS box is stolen, you'll always have a duplicate of your backups safely offsite.
We include instructions for how to setup your system to automatically accomplish this offsite backup process once a week or more.
After the initial setup, all you'll need to do is to bring the USB hard drive into the office on a designated day and plug it in to the administrator's computer. The backup event will automatically run at a pre-determined time. At the end of the work day, you'll take the drive with you offsite. Additionally, the BESR software will automatically encrypt the offsite backup, which will ensure that your data will remain secure if the USB drive is lost or stolen.
The Power Protection
We've included a business-grade American Power Conversion (APC) uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in this solution to protect the electronic components of the backup system from such maladies as dirty AC from the wall, power surges, brownouts, and complete blackouts. The NAS box and the UPS are connected by a USB cable and continuously communicate with each other; so, if necessary, the NAS box will gracefully shut down until the power event is resolved.
This APC UPS is capable of protecting both the Backup Package and an additional computer system — perfect if you plan to place the NAS box at your System Administrator’s desk, which is often the case.
